Producer Vegyn’s new album is filled to the brim with iridescent textures that seem to shift slowly as the songs progress; exposing and hiding new elements and samples that bring out a new emotional complexity in the feel of the tracks. Having famously produced for Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Endless, Vegyn’s individual influence becomes strikingly apparent as Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds is the manifestation of the unfiltered genius and sound that Frank and his team crafted with those albums.
The tones of this album will have you calmed while entertained, and Vegyn’s constantly evolving approach to sampling and drum programming provides for a new experience every time you listen through. ‘Blue Verb’ is an adventurous start to the project and sums up the overall tone and structure of the album in a calmly spazzing manner exemplifying the juxtaposition in sounds that Vegyn seems to be interested in exploring. ‘Nauseous/Devilish’ is a continuation of this theme and is one of the few moments on the album with vocals from a featuring artist. JPEGMAFIA’s witty bars over Vegyn’s barking instrumental works like magic and the track ends with a beautiful outro making for one of the highlights of the album.
‘That Ain’t No Dang Cat!’ gets the award for best song title off this album and sounds like an Earthbound adventure theme produced by aliens. ‘Debold’ is another favorite and features some of the most beautiful synths on the entire project your ears might damn near melt listening to this sonic odyssey. ‘Fake Life’ feels like a movie soundtrack in how cinematic it presents itself and the strings on this track are ethereal and make for the climax of the entire album.
Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds will continue to play as I drive in the streets, walk to my classes, or study in cafés; for every new context that I listen in, this album exposes a new layer in the way that these songs can be interpreted. Vegyn did his thing and his new album is a must-listen for anyone that breathes or drinks water.
