bbno$ - i don't care at all
i don’t care at all is bbno$’s (baby-no-money) second project of 2019, and his evolution between the two projects is remarkable. January’s recess stayed on repeat throughout the year; I loved the clean 2000’s-sounding beats and bbno$’s incredible flows and wordplay shine throughout the project leaving room for the solidly chosen features as well. His new album has a more organic-sounding set of production done mostly by Y2K with a myriad of styles that bbno$ pull out and puts away as if he had ADHD in sonic form.
The album starts with ‘bad thoughts’ and has bbno$ showing off his one-of-a-kind flow on a lush acoustic guitar before the beat comes in with some uniquely kinetic drums. The track sets the tone for the more organic sounding project and the ending features bbno$ singing which is something you'll get used to throughout this project. ‘on god’ initially feels like classic bbno$ and is one of the catchiest songs on the album. The constantly evolving song suddenly takes a turn about 2/3rds into the song and becomes something you might hear off an early Grimes album. The elaborate structure of bbno$’s songs is the product of the hard work and creative independence that he raps about on ‘on god.’
‘slop’ and ‘shining on my ex’ were both singles for this album and still slap harder than my dad. Both playful bops foreshadowed the production changes that bbno$ was looking to implement with this new project and still stand as highlights throughout the album. ‘I DON’T CARE AT ALL CAUSE I GOT MONEY!!!!!!’ is so fun to sing along to, and it exemplifies bbno$’s amusing approach to his newly found riches. bbno$’s fantastic writing abilities in any genre manifest in ‘pop song’ as he approaches the generic 2010’s pop song formula with his own unique voice and style.
‘jimmy neutron’ is a collab with LIL MAYO, the viral extraterrestrial, and they combine like peanut butter and jelly to make what is my favorite song off the album. Not many rappers can go bar to bar with an alien, but bbno$ was fittingly up to the task. ‘pouch’ is another example of the variety that bbno$ can bring to the table. Listening to this song strongly reminded me of Brazilian hip hop (funk paulista) artists like MC Bin Laden, and the beat was clearly inspired by the genre. bbno$ delivers an incredibly bouncy performance on this track, and the hook and beat breakdowns make this another strong gem in bbno$’s discography.
The name bbno$ is truly a paradox as this album deals with bbno$’s new fame and fortune and the pros and cons that may come with that. The future is bright for bbno$ and the year 2019 will mark the beginning of the next cap of a solid career for the artist.
