Chester Watson - Nebulous
After delaying his long-awaited debut album, A Japanese Horror Film, to next year, Watson satiated some of his fanbase’s hunger for new rhymes through the EP, Nebulous. Released on Halloween, the spooky sounding lo-fi project which is partially produced by Chester Watson himself save the songs ‘Sanity’ which is produced by frequent collaborator Psymun as well as ‘Human Ouija Board’ and ‘Lost in You’ which are produced by Hether and JTwoxx alongside Watson respectively. Speaking on dark and intimate topics about his life as well as observations on the decaying state of the society around him, ‘Time Traveler’ sets the EP’s tone with a beautifully chopped sample and open-sounding drums allowing Chester to weave through the beat like a seamstress sporting catchier flows than ever.
“I done spent the last few years of my life perfecting asymmetry,” Chester raps on ‘Human Ouija Board’ which is one of the more spacey tracks on the project representing Chester’s newly found peace with his role in life. Blu pops up as the only other rapper on the project and delivers an empowering verse on ‘Sanity’ reinforcing Chester’s message that the only thing that can keep you sane in today’s environment is friends and family.
The last track ‘Lost in You’ is the most abstract song on the project and sounds like a deconstructed R&B track before Chester comes in with a smooth verse using familiar flows while still keeping his own. Chester Watson’s evolution has seen him get better and better at crafting the sounds and rhymes of a cohesive project, and his album coming in 2020 will be worth the wait judging by what he delivered on the Nebulous EP.
