bbno$ - shining on my ex
Vancouver native bbno$ (baby-no-money) is one of the most refreshing, playful rappers in the game and has had a landmark year this 2019 with the releases of the appropriately titled ‘recess’ album and his countless hit singles like ‘Lalala,’ ‘slop,’ and ‘cheesy.’ He recently got Carly Rae Jepsen and Enrique Iglesias on the remix of ‘Lalala,’ and this out-of-left-field collaboration transforms the already entertaining pop single into an international crossover hit.
‘shining on my ex’ is bbno$’s latest installment in this continuous winning streak and acts as an intriguing single for his upcoming album which he has teased to be released this Friday. The song features frequent collaborator Yung Gravy and includes luscious production from Y2K who has also worked with bbno$ several times in the past. The constantly evolving beat never gets monotonic and every layer that pops in and out slightly changes the tone of the song with different instruments weaving in and out of the main beat. bbno$ and Yung Gravy keep bouncy flows with witty bars crafting a beautiful anthem about using success to show up people that may have doubted you in the past.
About two-thirds into the track bbno$ exemplifies why I love his very self-aware brand of braggadocious rap by stopping the song to say “Dude, I would be pissed OFF if this song blew up on Tik-Tok.” The beat then breaks down to the most Tik-Tok sounding dance beat which bbno$ rides the fuck out of ending the song with a bang. Excited to see it blow up on Tik-Tok, I downloaded the app and linked some of the worst ones.
