Nearing the end of 2019, Watsky posted a note to Twitter teasing ‘a new journey’ to come, expressing both his disdain and appreciation for the ‘noise’ of disposable playlist music culture, he released his first piece of music since January’s release of his fifth album, COMPLAINT. Produced by himself and Ryan Spraker, Advanced Placement is a bright track that twists and manipulates Watsky’s voice using it as its own instrument in remarkable fashion. The song is about gifted kid burnout and doesn’t spare a second in expressing that in the most creative ways starting with an angelic sounding intro that kicks off the song with an unexpected bang. Watsky’s shortly delivered quick verses keep true to what Watsky is known for even with this more abstract sounding song structure, and has definitely got me excited for the sounds in the new album to come!
